2008 Online Holiday Shopping Begins with Research

According to a recent Google study, the Internet is the key influencer of holiday purchases. This year, the Internet is playing an especially vital role in retail revenue. Consumers are researching planned purchases earlier in the year and using the online channel increasingly to do so.  Because money is tight for many this year, comparison shopping has increased and online is the most convenient way for most to find the best deal.

Shoppers are researching products online early in the season although the research and purchasing peak is less than 45 days.  The comparison of the charts also illustrate that shoppers are less impulsive while looking for the best deals online.

According to Google, ‘Cyber Monday’ will be an even bigger shopping day than ‘Black Friday.’  Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving.  Many shoppers that go to the malls on Black Friday actually purchase online on Monday in hopes of better deals and as an easier way to send the items as gifts to those that live out of their area.

When did you begin your holiday research?  And what percentage of your holiday shopping will be online this year?

Actually I began doing my shopping search a month ago. Haven’t made up my mind yet, but I’m thinking of doing all my shopping online particular for cyber monday. If the stores offer a free in store pickup, I’ll definitely take advantage of that.
